But the trailer is still available on youtube). If you want to know more about him, do check on youtube for ‘karikalan movie trailer’ (Apparently they started making a movie on Karikalan with Actor Vikram as the lead, but the project was dropped mid way. If I am talking too much about him here, please do bear because he is the most prominent historical character in this novel and I felt there is a need to praise this Hulk like man. Also some claim that Kari-Kalan means a yaman like man sitting on top of an elephant, emphasizing how vigorous he was in war (Kalan means yaman). Only after reading the book I googled and figured out that it is true that he faced a lot of conspiracies trying to snatch his kingdom from him, there were numerous murder attempts on him- one of them even burnt his leg and so he is Kari-kalan (one with a black/burnt leg).

His time is some 1000 years before the most well known Chozhas Raja Rajan and Rajendran so the history doesn’t have enough evidences from the past and may be that is why we didn’t read much about him in our history books. I always knew that Karikala Chozhan was an important personality in history but I had no clue that he has been so self made and magnificent. Now coming to what all I liked about the story… Foremost, I couldn’t resist being awestruck by Karikalan. He plots the story around few real incidents and characters from the history but uses imagination to take the lead. Ilanchezhiyan uses all his wit to rescue the Prince கரிகாலன் (Karikalan-a valourous and popular Chozha king in the history, who plays something like a hero kum mela role in this novel) and the Chozha kingdom from a bunch of conspirators, including the greeks who aim to snatch the mighty kingdom away from the righteous hands.įYI Ilanchezhiyan, his lover girl, the Greek queen and her greek conspirators are imaginary characters.

He encounters a Greek Queen who falls in love with our hero in contrast to the purpose of her visit to the Chozha Kingdom.

Despite having it all, his lover girl keeps rejecting him which makes him a sad soup boy. He is witty, wise, smart, daring, strong, good-looking, basically everything good put together in one man (which I felt was quiet unrealistic). This story is plotted in the Early Chozhas period and the hero Ilanchezhiyan is one of the Commanders-in-chief of the massive chozha army. Most people who have followed Sandilyan will take the name of this book as his best work ever (But personally there is another one that I like more). Today we are going to dive into a classic Sandilyan novel- யவன ராணி (Greek Queen).
